Working papers and work in progress

  •   Trade, Access to Varieties and Patterns of Consumption,  Working Paper DP2020-11  Revised & Resubmitted
Abstract: This paper provides empirical evidence that product diversity has driven a part of the evolution of consumers’ spending in the U.S. over the 1993-2006’s period. The  change in number of varieties available has led consumers to allocate a larger share of their budget to sectors subject to greater varieties expansions. I exploit the exogenous change in the range of products available induced by the growth of international trade to identify the causal relation. Using this identification, I show that changes in product diversity had a sizable effect on the evolution of patterns of consumption, especially relative to the price effect.

  •  Migration, FDI and the Margins of Trade (with H. Rapoport), Working Paper DP2019-22
Abstract:This paper investigates the relationships between trade, migration and FDI in an unified framework. The impact of migration on exports and the impact of migration on FDI flows have been studied separately so far. In this paper, we have built a theoretical model that integrates the relationship between trade, migration and FDI. From this model, we have developed a structural gravity equation that corrects well-known endogeneity problems that arise from the interdependency between FDI and trade as well as for the well-known biases potentially arising from the omission of the extensive margin.

  • Firm's Interlinkages, Migration and Trade (with  A. Edo)
Abstract: This paper investigates how immigration can stimulate firms' exports by affecting their production structures. A large literature concludes that immigrant networks increase exports to the country of origin of immigrants. Using a panel dataset between 2003 and 2017, we show that the correlation between the number of immigrants and exports is weak when the interlinkages between the different sectors are taken into account. We show that the increase in exports results, for most of its part, from the impact of immigration on productivity along the production chain and only slightly from the migrant networks.

  • Impact of the Pandemic on the French Agricultural Production (avec A. Napoly et G. Peri)
Abstract: This paper investigates whether the pandemic declared in March, 2020 has had an impact on the agricultural production in France. More specifically, we study whether the agricultural sector has suffered from a labor shortage. This shortage may have been created either by the disease preventing agricultural work or by the restrictions of movements and work decreed by the French government.

  • Exploring Heterogeneity in the Wage Effect of Immigration (avec J. Héricourt, L. Marchal et C. Nedoncelle)
Abstract: This meta-analysis aims to better understand where the literature stands on the impact of immigration on the wages of natives. The last meta-analysis on the subject was carried out in 2008, 12 years ago. Interest in this research question has risen since 2008, in particular because of the growing political interest in the subject. We have, therefore, set up a meta-analysis with the most recent articles.  These most recent researches enable to analyze this relationship in a greater number of countries.

Research Projects

2018-2021  NaWaCC
This project investigates the impact of immigrant workers on natives’ jobs and wages. In particular, we investigate why the impact of immigrants varies across countries.

2013-2015 Labor force diversity and firm's performance: a microeconomic approach (FRS-FNRS)
This project  investigates the link between diversity  cultural diversity in the labor force (measured in term of birthplace, ethnicity, religious affiliation, genetic characteristics) and competitiveness at the microeconomic level.

2011-2012 The importance of demand factors in the analysis of gains from trade (FSR's grant, catholic University of Louvain)
This project investigates in what extent gains from intra-industry trade are function of markets and countries’ characteristics.
